Mr Obama was addressing the 100th anniversary America’s largest civil rights organisation the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) at a central New York hotel.

오바마 대통령은 센트럴 뉴욕 호텔에서 열린, 미국에서 가장 큰 시민단체, NAACP(National Association for the Advancement of Colored People·유색인종 지위 향상을 위한 협회) 100주년 기념식에 참석했다.

 

He stressed that it was now "very important" for Africa's leaders to "take responsibility and be held accountable".

"I understand there may be a temptation among some to think that discrimination is no longer a problem in 2009,"

Mr Obama said. "But make no mistake: The pain of discrimination is still felt in America."

"The pain of inequality was felt by all people, and not only black Americans. By African American women paid less for doing the same work as colleagues of a different colour and gender. By our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights."

Youngsters should dream of being "scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers" rather than the next "LeBron James and Lil Wayne", he said, referring to the basketball star and rapper respectively.

"I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States," he said.

그리고 “아이들이 큰 뜻을 품게 하라. 아이들이 래퍼(rapper)만이 아니라, 과학자 기술자 의사 교사 대법관 대통령이 되겠다는 열망을 갖도록 하자”고 말했다.


No one has written your destiny for you,” he said, directing his remarks to “all the other Barack Obamas out there” who might one day grow up to be president.

“Your destiny is in your hands, and don’t you forget that. That’s what we have to teach all of our children! No excuses! No excuses!”

Mr Obama also said that blacks were more likely to be hit by unemployment, and not to have access to healthcare.

It was the first time the President had tackled the sensitive issue of race since the speech he delivered last year to silence the controversy over remarks by his former minister the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

이어 그는 “경제난이 모든 인종을 강타했지만 가장 실업률이 높은 건 흑인이다. 의료보험 없이 질병에 가장 많이 시달리는 것도 흑인”이라고 지적했다. 지난 2년간 인종문제에 대해 매우 조심스럽고 우회적인 표현만 사용해 온 그로선 이례적으로 강한 표현이었다.

"We need a new mindset, a new set of attitudes – because one of the most durable and destructive legacies of discrimination is the way that we have internalised a sense of limitation, how so many in our community have come to expect so little of ourselves," he said.

"What is required to overcome today's barriers is the same as was needed then – the same commitment, the same sense of urgency," he said, in his first speech on race since his election as America's first black president.

Mr Obama, a father of two young girls, said parents needed to force their children to put down their video games and get to bed on time.

Noting that his own life could have taken a different path had it not been for his mother's firm approach, he said: "She took no lip and taught me right from wrong. Because of her, I had a chance to make the most of my abilities," he told an audience of 5,000 NAACP delegates late on Thursday.
